  • Study finds gaps in heart failure care given to thousands USA Today - July 27th, 2010
    Researchers have identified gaps in the quality of heart failure care provided to thousands of patients by cardiologists who don't always follow treatment guidelines. The study of cardiologists in 167 community practices serving nearly 35,000 outpatients first identified the omissions and then sought to close them using a package of educational workshops, decision-support tools and reminders. Aug. 27, 2010 (McClatchy-Tribune Regional News delivered by Newstex) -- The patient had arrived a few days earlier complaining of chest pains, reason unknown.

The case, while not an emergency, was deemed a priority. Doctors at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center determined it would be best to use a cardiac catheterization to determine a diagnosis -- itself a not-uncommon procedure.
